What is… Ganbare Super Strikers

Hi VitaIslanders!

In the What is series on VitaIslandViews, I want to quickly present you some games so that you have an idea of what they are about. The goal of this series is not to present you graded reviews, since I will mostly share this kind of posts when a game launches, and writing this without having finished it. So, see it more as a first impressions series.

And yeah, today Ganbare Super Strikers makes the start.

So, what’s special about this game? Well, it mixes two genres, turn-based RPG + football/soccer (depending on where you are from). This sounds first as a kind of crazy combination; but, it’s actually a lot of fun!

You basically play through a Story Mode in which you have to win against a number of different teams in order to become the champion. For each game, you have certain objectives in order to win bonus items for your next games, e.g. score at least 3 goals. The bonus items can then be equipped to your players and improve their stats. The players also earn experience points and level up accordingly, which lets them learn new abilities, e.g. a tackle that freezes the opponent, and lets him one round without action. So, there are several mechanics coming from RPGs involved.

Once a game starts you move around the field in turns, and depending on the action points you have available. With two actions points, you can move the player and shoot towards the goal, for example, or tackle the opponent if you are defending.

The trophy set has been created completely around the story mode, so you basically get one trophy per game you win in it, and the platinum for finishing the story mode- this can be done on either easy or normal difficulty.

Besides the Story Mode, Rese Games also created an Arcade Mode, which lets you set up your own friendly games or competitions (tournament or league).

I’ve played a couple of games so far, and I can already say that I really love the idea of it- it’s fun! I have to say that the framerate dips sometimes a bit, playable and enjoyable, but there are some dips. There are also some parts of the game where you notice that it had a rather small budget, e.g. the storytelling without voice acting, the animations for goals, so I really hope this game is a success, the dev gets a higher budget and makes a 2nd part of the game- because the idea is really great and I’m having a fun time with Ganbare!

The game has been developed by Rese Games, and been ported by Ratalaika Games to PS Vita.

Here’s the trailer for you:

The game is now available on PSN for your PS Vita!
